Can you meet God at work?
by Sandra Palmer

Let me begin by saying that writing to the theme of ‘Linger, Created to Worship’ provokes me to speak from my personal experiences and beliefs.  My inspiration comes from ‘The Message’ (an easy-to-understand version of the Bible), specifically the book of Romans.  See what Chapter 12 says:

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you:  Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking around life – and place it before God as an offering.  Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.”

As always, I cant help but relate these ideas to the workplace.  Not only because it is my designated category in which to write but also, let’s face it, a huge proportion of our time is spent at work.  Out of the 15 hours each day that I am awake, I spend 7 ½ hours at my desk and another 1 hour and 45 minutes commuting to and from work.  That is 9 ¼ hours of energy spent towards work each and every day.

So how do we weave worship into our ‘sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking around life’?  I certainly don’t have all the answers, but here are some of things I do:

Get planned
Make space in your diary for regular God time.  I have two one-hour slots midweek.

Look forward to it
Creating space in your life for God should be a breath of fresh air.  Make it interesting and make it work.  Look forward to it, and don’t let other meetings and commitments clash with it or take priority.

Get out of the office
Why not take your exercise gear to work and spend your lunch break taking a brisk walk.  Be intentional about thanking God for all he is as you get out in the fresh air, and observe your mood as your work issues fade into insignificance while God gets bigger in your life.  If you are not the exercising type, pick up your journal and Bible and head to your favorite café – centre your thoughts on the Almighty as you sip your drink of choice.

Stay focused
Don’t forget why you’re doing what you’re doing.  It’s so easy to let scenarios of work issues cloud your mind while you walk and, equally, it’s easy to pick up the paper and flick through it instead of reading your Bible.  Be intentional about focusing on God and his greatness.

Finally, be creative
Figure out what suits your work lifestyle and weave that into your daily or weekly routine.  The tips above suit my work lifestyle but yours may be (and probably is) significantly different.

See you next time,
Sandra
