"He taught by using stories, many stories." MARK 4:2 (THE MESSAGE)

Haydn & Belinda Nelson

Hey Everyone,

This month at Riverview we are going to the movies or, more exactly, the movies are coming to us!

When one reads the Bible it doesn’t take long to notice the presence of stories. Even Jesus, as he walked this earth and spoke wisdom and life to those around him, would often do so by telling a particular type of story – known as a parable. A parable was really just a “story that teaches” or a “story that points the way” - parables were stories with purpose. And Jesus “taught by using stories, many stories” (Mark 4:2 MSG). He recognised the power of stories – that they do more than just communicate to people, they connect with people.

And so, this month, we’re be spending some time looking at contemporary story-telling found through the medium of movies – and there are so many from which to choose! As we do this, we’ll be engaging in what John Stott calls “double listening” - listening to both the Word and the world so that we might more sensitively, intelligently and wisely relate the one with the other.

Also, and as a special treat this month, we’ll be welcoming as a guest speaker Mark Conner from City Life Church in Melbourne, Mark is a great friend of Riverview and you will blessed by what he brings.

So, September promises again to be a significant month in the life of Riverview Church! Let’s come with faith-filled and expectant hearts – ready to encounter and be encountered by God.

Warmly,

Haydn.
