Riverview Church is a large, contemporary, multi-cultural and multi-generational community of Jesus-followers. We live to love God with all that we are and love each other the way He loved us.

We are thoughtful in our approach to life and faith, vibrant in our spirituality and deeply committed to making a difference in our world for good and for God. Regardless of where you are on your journey of faith, you can belong here!

Tania is Executive Minister overseeing church operations and community life at Riverview. Tania loves to help people flourish within the church community and on mission for Jesus. Tania is married to Neil and they are blessed to have adult children and a beautiful black schnoodle named Sundae.

We exist to call people to follow Jesus and empower them to take the whole gospel to the whole world.

“We live to know God and make Him known.”

The purpose of God for our lives is most clearly revealed in the Great Commandment (to love God with all that we have and all that we are and others as ourselves) and the Great Commission (to go into all the world and announce the good news that Jesus is alive and Jesus is Lord).

“We serve God by loving others.”

People hold a special place in the heart of God and serve a unique purpose in the world. Each one is made in God’s image and likeness and deserves love and respect. We want to see all people, particularly the marginalised and vulnerable, connected, equipped and inspired to fulfil their potential and serve their God-given purpose on earth.

“We love God with enthusiasm and joy.”

This motivates us to bring the best that we can to everything we do. Our level of effectiveness in serving God and loving others is raised by the level of enthusiasm with which we do it. Wholehearted obedience to God is therefore the best way to express our love for God.

“We depend on the Spirit of God.”

The supernatural power of the Holy Spirit enables us to be what God has called us to be and do what God has called us to do. This manifests as both ‘gifts’ (abilities) and ‘fruit’ (Christ-like character) that serve as evidence of God’s transforming work in and through our lives.

“We represent Jesus best in this world by living exemplary lives.”

Lives of love, service and character that reflect the values and ethics of the Kingdom of God are necessary for being an effective Kingdom representative and gospel communicator. Our presence in the world should improve and preserve the communities to which we belong.

The Apostles Creed is the cornerstone of our theology and the irreducible minimum to which we adhere without compromise. Over and above the Creed we subscribe to a generous orthodoxy that recognises the complex and vast array of theological perspectives from which we can learn and grow, even if we do not fully agree with all of them.

“I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into death. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.”

(*that is, the whole Christian church of all times and all places)

We believe that God exists and has revealed Himself most fully through Jesus Christ whose life and teachings reflect the heart of God for the world and the will of God for all people. God is personal, relational and therefore knowable and He invites all people everywhere to experience full life through faithfulness to Him and trust in Him.

We believe that God is one being consisting of three distinct persons, equal and indivisible, and that experiencing God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit is essential to a true and life-giving knowledge of God. This personal, experiential knowledge of God is made possible through the Holy Spirit who transforms the human heart and empowers believers for life and service.

We believe that all people are created equal in the eyes of God and are therefore loved by God. We believe that all people were created in the image of God to have life-filled relationship with Him but have been alienated through humanity’s rebellion. People are incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through their own efforts and must come to God through trust in and allegiance to Jesus who, through His death, burial and resurrection, is the only mediator between God and humankind.

We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and that it remains relevant today because its purpose remains necessary. The purpose of the Scriptures is to provide us with a narrative history of God’s redeeming work in the world and to reveal the primary focus of that work i.e. the person of God the Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is a revelation of God’s will and God’s way and serves as an authoritative source of guidance, wisdom, correction and inspiration through which God continues to speak to the community of faith.

The Church is the corporate body of Jesus followers, from every age, who have experienced new life through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit and who have pledged allegiance to Jesus as Lord of all creation. The Church finds expression in local communities when believers come together for worship, relationship, service and prayer. Though imperfect, it seeks to bring an outworking of God’s Kingdom on earth and an image of what life under the lordship of Jesus looks like.

The gospel is the good news that Jesus is alive and Jesus is Lord and because of this, humankind has been offered reconciliation leading to restored relationship with God. The mission of the Church is to proclaim and participate in the coming of the Kingdom of God on earth by faithfully sharing this good news and living out its implications in the world.

We believe that ‘faith’ is essential to right relationship with God. Biblical faith, however, is more than intellectual agreement with a set of propositional truths about God. True faith includes belief in God, dependence on God and obedience to God and is therefore best understood as loyalty or ‘faithfulness’ to Jesus as Lord.

We believe the universe was purposefully and masterfully created by God out of nothing and that God’s compassion, care and delight extend to all that He has made. While humanity occupies a special place in the heart of God, it is not an exclusive place and God’s love and concern includes all of creation. We believe that all creation will be restored and renewed by God in the new Kingdom when Jesus returns to set the world right as its ultimate and rightful ruler.

Riverview is an independent and non-denomination church that began in 1979 with a handful of people gathering in a small hall in Belmont, Western Australia under the name Inner City Faith Fellowship. The simple gospel message of reconciliation with God and others saw this small gathering flourish in number outgrow several Perth inner-city venues during its early years. In 1985 the church was renamed Rhema Family Church and moved to its current home in Burswood and Philip Baker, the son of the church’s founders was appointed as the new Senior Minister. During this period the church became committed to reaching beyond itself and becoming a place where anybody could feel welcomed which was marked by a change in name to Riverview Church in 1998. Over the next decade the church continued to grow and added two new campuses, one in the northern suburb of Joondalup and another in the southern suburb of Cockburn Central.

In April 2009, Philip Baker faced an unexpected health crisis and suffered a post-surgery complication that left him incapable of continuing in his role as Senior Minister. Haydn Nelson, who was Executive Minister at the time, was appointed as the new Senior Minister one year later. Over the next seven years the campuses were released to establish two new independent churches and the Burswood venue began a significant renovation requiring Riverview to move offsite for 12 months.

In 2017 Haydn Nelson resigned as Senior Minister and Tim and Liezl Healy were appointed as the new Senior Leaders of Riverview Church, with Tim occupying the Senior Minister role and Liezl the Executive Minister role. In 2018, Riverview Joondalup was launched and Saints Church (formerly Northreach Community Church) re-joined the Riverview family.

In October 2020, Tim and Liezl Healy resigned from their leadership positions at Riverview. The Board has commenced a process for appointing a new Senior Minister.

Riverview Church remains committed to reaching the world with the good news that Jesus is alive and Jesus is Lord. Through regular weekend gatherings in Perth (Burswood and Joondalup), online gatherings attended by people from all over the world, and small group communities across our city, we endeavour to call people to follow Jesus and empower them to take the whole gospel to the whole world.
